A court in Kushtia has sentenced a school headmaster to life imprisonment for raping a teacher in 2016.
Kushtia Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman passed the order on Tuesday.
Shariful Islam, 35, was the headmaster of Mujibnagar Amrakanon Primary School in Meherpur where the rape survivor was a part-time teacher.
The court also ordered the convict to pay a penalty of Tk1 lakh, or face imprisonment for another six months.
According to court sources, on May 13, 2016, the woman came to Kushtia with Shariful to sit for the Secondary School Teacher Registration Exam.
The next day, Shariful raped her inside a hotel room in the town.
The rape survivor was sent to Kushtia Sadar Hospital. She later filed a case with Kushtia Sadar police station against Shariful.
Police submitted a charge-sheet to the court on October 1, 2016, and after a long hearing, the court announced the verdict.
