A man has been killed in a “gunfight” with the police in Gangni upazila, Meherpur.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Garadob village.
The deceased is Yakub Ali Kajal, 23. He was accused in one rape and one acid attack case.
Gangni police station Inspector (investigation) Sajedul Islam said: “Kajal had confessed to the police about both the rape and acid attack.”
Inspector Sajedul said Kajal was the leader of a group of miscreants in Garadob village. They carried firearms as well, he said.
“Following Kajal’s confession, we went to Garadob village to recover the firearms in his cohorts’ possession,” said Inspector Sajedul.
Kajal was taken along to the raid.
Police said upon their arrival, Kajal’s cohorts opened fire at them. The police fired back in self-defence.
Four members of the police were injured in the gunfight and Kajal was shot. Kajal was taken to the Gangni Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Kajal and some of his cohorts allegedly abducted and raped a schoolgirl on December 20 last year. A case was filed by the girl’s mother accusing Kajal.
Kajal went into hiding in Dhola village after the incident. He was living with a distant relative.
He hurled acid at a housewife in Dhola village on Thursday after she rejected his advances.
Police arrested him in this regard on Friday. Later he was identified as the accused in the rape case as well.
The injured housewife is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.
