Man killed in Rajshahi 'gunfight'

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday

A man has been killed in a "gunfight" with police in Bagha upazila of Rajshahi.

The incident took place in the early hours of Friday. The deceased is Jiwarul Islam Kalu, 39. He had been accused in 10 cases. 

Nine police officers were also injured. They have been admitted to the Upazila Health Complex.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bagha police station, Mohsin Ali Janan, said: "Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drug drive at a mango orchard in Pakoria union of Keshobpur village. 

"However, upon seeing the police presence, the drug-peddlers opened fire at the police officers, forcing police to fire back, which triggered the gunfight," he said.

Police also recovered a pistol, two rounds of bullets, and 53 bottles of phensedyl from the site of the incident.

The deceased's body has been sent to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital morgue. A case has been filed.
