At least 20 villages in Barhatta upazila of Netrokona distriict have been marooned as a big portion of a dam near Singer water body under Chiram union council washed away due to high tides of the Knangso River yesterday.
According to locals, crops of 500 hectare land went under water as the dam washed away.
They said the dam collapsed late on Monday, sending flash floods through 20 villages.
More than 5,000 people have been made homeless,
Salauddin Khan Rubel of Deopur village said he was going to loss ripen paddy on five bigha land as fresh flood water submerged the area suddenly.
The flood caused by incessant rain and the onrush of water coming down from the hills over the last few days has inundated the standing crop on 500 hectares in the upazila, said Netrokona Water Development Board sources.
The sources said heavy rainfall for the last couple of days and onrush of waters from the upstream regions have contributed to the flood.
Locals expressed the apprehension that rest of the standing crops in the haor area might be damaged if the rainfall continued.
Meanwhile, Barhatta Upazila Parishad Chairman Moinul Haque Kashem, UNO Farida Yasmin, Water Development Board Executive Chairman Aktaruzzaman visited the area to see situation.
