Four Bagachra Shatmail Mohila Alim Madrasa teachers—including the school's principal—have been detained over the sexual harassment of a fifth-grader in Sharsha upazila of Jessore.

Police detained the four on Wednesday.

Sharsha police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) M Moshiur Rahman confirmed the incident.

The detainees are: teacher Shariful Islam, Principal Mohsin Kabir, assistant teacher Jamal Hossain, and Managing Committee Member Nurul Islam.

A case was filed at the Sharsha police station in this regard.

Shariful Islam is accused of sexually harassing a student, while the others were listed as cohorts.

Shariful had allegedly been harassing this student for a while. She has not spoken up fearing social stigma.

After being sexually harassed by him again, on Sunday, the girl disclosed the issue to a female teacher at the madrasa. She went home and recounted the abuse to her parents as well.

Her father informed Principal Mohsin about the matter. Subsequently, the principal assured him that he [Mohsin] will resolve the issue.

The family of the young girl claimed that instead of taking action, the principal and madrasa managing committee took Shariful’s side and allegedly tried to bury the allegation.

The father disclosed the matter to the media on Tuesday, hoping to get the attention of the local authorities.

The same day, police recorded the statement of the girl and her father and detained the four accused in the case.

The OC said: “We sent the four detainees to court on Thursday.”
