Madrasa Education Board Chairman Prof AKM Saifullah has said that now is the right time to deal with the anarchy prevailing in madrasa governing bodies.

"With Nusrat Jahan Rafi's death, it has been made clear that it is high time to counter the disorderly situation of the madrasa governing bodies," Saifullah told reporters on Sunday after visiting Feni's Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa, where Nusrat was set on fire earlier this month.

"We are investigating other such characters like Md Sirajaddaula (sacked principal of the Sonagazi madrasa)," he said. "In future, if we find proof of anyone guilty of harassing a student, we will take strict measures against them."

No uneducated people will be allowed to be a part of any madrasa governing body in the future, Saifullah added.

"I believe, everyone involved in such an inhuman crime will be given the highest punishment," he added. "We have already started working on a five-member committee to prevent sexual harassment all across the country."

The government funded monthly pay orders (MPO) of former Sonagazi Madrasa principal Sirjaddaula and teacher Absar Uddin have been suspended, the madrasa board chairman said.

Feni primary education official Kazi Salimullah, upazila secondary education official Md Nurul, among others, were present during the chairman's visit.

So far, police have arrested a total of 23 people in Nusrat's murder case, and eight of them have given their confessional statements in court.

Nusrat, a student of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil (Degree) Madrasa, was set on fire on the roof of the madrasa building on April 6, after she refused to withdraw a sexual harassment case against the principal, Sirajaddaula. She died of her injuries on April 10 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Sirajaddaula reportedly planned the murder from jail, where he was sent after Nusrat filed her case.
