A mentally-challenged youth has reportedly stabbed his mother and grandmother to death in Jhenaidah.
The incident occurred at Nauda village in Maheshpur upazila around 2am on Friday.
The deceased are Marjina Khatun, 50, and her mother Shamsunnahar, 70, of the village.
After realizing the duo had been stabbed by sharp weapons, neighbours rushed them to Jessore General Hospital where the on-duty physician declared them dead on arrival.
Rashedul Alam, officer-in-charge of Maheshpur police station, said: "Marjina used to live with her mother Shamsunnahar and son Imran Hossain, 28, in the house. Imran, who had serious mental illness, received treatment from Pabna Mental Hospital some four months ago. He used to hit his mother and grandmother when they tried to force him to take medicine."
"Some psychiatric drugs and a prescription, prescribed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Psychiatrist Jahangir Hossain, were also found in the house. Imran had an altercation with his mother and grandmother as they tried to give him medicine around 2am."
The OC added: "At one stage, Imran stabbed Marjina and Shamsunnahar indiscriminately, leaving them critically injured. Later, they were taken to Jashore Medical College Hospital where the duty doctors declared them dead."
Marjina, a lab assistant at Maheshpur Girls School, used to live at her parent's house as she got divorced from her husband in 1999.
However, some locals claimed Imran was a drug addict and used to beat up his mother and grandmother often for cash.
