An 11-year-old from Bagerhat’s Baruipara has been raped by her neighbour.
On Saturday night, the minor was sleeping alone at her grandmother's home when Nizam broke into the house. He gagged the minor during the rape to prevent screams. Nizam escaped when the minor’s aunt knocked on the door.
The next day, the child’s uncle Rafiqul Islam Didar went to Nizam's house to ask him what happened the day before. However, Nizam, his son and wife ganged up on Didar and beat him up.
On Sunday night, Didar filed a case against Nizam and his son and wife.
"If not punished, crime rates will go on increasing. We stand in support with child rape victims and will locally protest against such crimes. We expect law and enforcement agencies to take quick action against it," she added.
Pankaj Chandra Rai, assistant superintendent of police with the Bagerhat Model police station said: "A case has been filed and the survivor has undergone medical tests at Bagerhat Sadar Hospital. We are working to arrest the people accused."
Bagerhat Sadar upazila Vice Chairman Rizia Parveen said: "It is disgusting that children today are not safe anywhere, not even in their own homes. This is a great threat for society.”
The victim's father left the family a decade ago; her mother and elder sister work in Dhaka to earn a living. Since then, the minor has been living with her grandmother and studies at a local school.
