A female madrasa student, also an Alim examinee, was set on fire by unidentified miscreants in Sonagazi upazila, Feni.
The incident occurred when the student sat for her Alim examination at the Sonagazi Fazil Degree Madrasa centre around 10am, on Saturday.
The family of the victim said supporters of Sirajuddaula, the madrasa's principal, committed the act as he had been accused of attempting to rape her.
Nurul Alam, a physician at Sonagazi hospital, said the victim sustained almost 80% burn injuries and will be taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
Confirming the matter, Moazzem Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonagazi model police station, said: "The matter is being investigated and whoever set her on fire will be brought to justice."
The OC also said: "The student was sitting for the Alim examination which began on April 1. She later brought sexual harassment allegations against Sirajuddaula, principal of the madrasa.
Upon a formal complaint by the victim's family on March 27, police investigated the matter and found there was truth to the allegations. The principal was detained and since then he has been in the district jail."
However, following the arrest of the principal, supporters of both the principal and the victim have staged demonstrations and human chains in several phases, the OC added.
