Saddam Hossain, 27, the prime accused in a case of gang-raping a woman in front of her boyfriend in Tangail was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Friday.
In a press conference, RAB-12 Acting Commander Shafiqur Rahman said: “Saddam was arrested through an operation based on tips. Saddam went on the run after committing the crime. He was trying to flee to Dhaka from Tangail.“
He further said Saddam was also accused of a murder case of 2014.
According to sources, the rape survivor and her boyfriend were sitting together in a field around 4pm when they were accosted by five men - Jalal Uddin, 25, Ashraful, 26, Nazrul Islam, 30, Afaz Uddin, 23 and Saddam.
They bound the hands and feet of the two and forced them into a nearby jungle, where they demanded the boy rape the girl. When the boy refused, they tied him to a tree forced themselves on the girl, taking turns raping her and recording the ordeal on a mobile phone.
The RAB commander said law enforcement agencies are working to catch the others named in the case.
