A 12-year-old schoolgirl, who was brutally violated by a youth some two months back in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur, has succumbed to the injuries suffered in course of the rape.
She died on Friday while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, police arrested Liton Mattubar, 22, the accused rapist, on Saturday after the deceased’s family had lodged a case.
Liton, son of Rashed Mattubar of the upazila’s Kawlibera village, allegedly raped the girl of the same village after luring her to a deserted area when she was going to a neighbouring house to watch TV on the night of January 20.
After the victim was found unconsciousness following the assault, she was taken to Sadarpur Upazila Health Complex and then to Faridpur Medical College hospital, the family said.
When they informed local leaders of the incident and asked them to resolve it through arbitration, Liton and his family began threatening them with dire consequences, the victim's family claimed.
Later, the deceased’s uncle Kalam Sheikh filed the case with Bhanga police station on March 23.
Syed Abdullah, officer-in-charge of the police station, said they were taking action against the accused.
The dead body has been sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
