Unidentified miscreants have hacked and critically injured a schoolteacher at Madhyanagar in Sunamganj’s Dharmapasha upazila.

The victim, Ramendra Chandar Sarkar, 47, works at the Madhyanagar Bazar Government Primary School. He lives with his family in the Sampadpur village under the Madhyanagar union.

The attack on him was carried out around 9:30pm on Sunday on the road between the Itauri and Sampadpur villages, said police and family members.

They said several unknown attackers hacked Ramendra with sharp weapons when he was returning home from the Madhyanagar Bazar. There were several wounds on his body and head.

As the attackers fled the scene right away, locals after hearing his cries for help rescued and rushed Ramendra to the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

The father of two was, however, shifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Monday morning for better treatment after his condition deteriorated, said his nephew Jhalak Talukder.

He said Ramendra was still in critical condition. “We moved him to DMCH following doctors’ suggestion as he was having frequent seizures.”

Madhyanagar police station Sub-Inspector Shawkat said police visited the area on Sunday night after being informed about the incident.

“We cannot say anything yet regarding who carried out the attack and why,” he said, adding that the perpetrators would be brought too book.

Ramendra’s cousin Ranjan Talukder said: “My cousin is known in the locality as a good person and a good teacher. He had no enemies as far as we know.

“We are completely in the dark as to why he was barbarically attacked.”

Ramendra’s wife Sathi Rani Nath is also a teacher at the Dugnoi Government Primary School in the Dharmapasha upazila.
