Police rescued a hanged dead body of a fisherman named Md Rafiq alias Sonamia from a jhao garden in Teknaf upazila at morning on March 30.
The garden was on the banks of the river Naf, near Shahporir Dwip in Teknaf.
The Officer in Charge (OC) of Teknaf Police Station, Pradip Kumar Das, confirmed the authenticity of the news and said the incident was under investigation.
The OC said: ‘‘On Saturday morning, some fishermen informed the police after seeing the corpse hanging in a jhao garden. A police team retrieved the dead body from the spot.’’
For a long time now, fishing in the river Naf has been stopped . Consequently, local fishermen have a tough life.
The wife of the deceased, Dildar Begum, said her family had an unbearable life and the children were hungry and crying.
Dildar said, seeing the tears in his children’s eyes, Sonamia left the house and next morning she heard the news of his death.
Locals said they thought Sonamia committed suicide, unable to bear his family’s extreme poverty.
