UP member arrested for beating woman in Bogra

The victim has been in a land dispute with her sister Jolekha and her husband Nesar

A Union Parishad (UP) member has been arrested and sent to jail for beating a woman in Bogra.

Ward 5 UP member Abdul Mannan allegedly beat Shahanara Begum, 45, after calling her in to his office at Kohitkul village in Fapor union of Bogra Sadar upazila to settle a land dispute on Tuesday, March 26. The beating caused Shahanara to lose a tooth, and she needed 11 stitches on her face.

Abdul Mannan was produced before court and sent to jail pending investigation of the case on Friday, after the victim’s son Shamim Hossain filed a case with Bogra Sadar police station. Nesar, the husband of Shahanara’s sister Jolekha, was also named as an accused in the case.

According to case details, Shahanara has been in a land dispute with her sister and her husband. After Jolekha filed a complaint regarding the matter, the UP member called a Salish (arbitration) on March 26, where he beat Shahanara with a bamboo stick.

After the beating, Shahanara was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Bogra Sadar police station SI Solaiman Ali confirmed the incident, and said Abdul Mannan has previously beaten two other women during arbitration of disputes.
