55-year-old dies in Feni police custody

Update : 26 Mar 2017, 01:46 AM
A 55-year-old person has died allegedly after being tortured and given electric shocks in police custody in Feni. Police refuted the allegation raised by the victim’s family, claiming that Nurul Amin had suffered a stroke, reports Bangla Tribune. Feni model police Officer-in-Charge Rashed Khan Chowdhury claimed that they had arrested Amin as a warranted criminal from the town’s Pagla Mia Road area on Thursday. Later at night he suffered a stroke and was taken to a local hospital, the OC said, adding: “Amin finally was shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for better treatment where he died on Friday morning.” Amin’s son Nurul Afsar Manik alleged that his father had been beaten up and then electrocuted at the police station. He said that the case in which the police had shown him arrested was filed by a local over previous enmity. “The complainant bribed the police to arrest and torture him,” he claimed. Manik said that they would file a case against the police. According to rights group Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), Bangladesh saw at least 78 custodial deaths last year. The figure, prepared based on news reports, was 69 in 2015.
