To decorate every house with the splendor of red and green on Independence Day, a differently-abled female author has distributed 500 national flags of Bangladesh in five upazilas of Thakurgaon.

The initiative was taken by the author, Jui Jasmine, to commemorate Independence  Day; that was celebrated nationwide on Tuesday.

On Monday afternoon, the young author walked to several houses in different villages of Baliadangi upazila to provide them with flags. Meanwhile, flags were also distributed the same way in the Pirganj, Haripur, Ranisankail, and Sadar upazilas.

The gesture was enthusiastically received by the people in rural areas of the district, and stirred up emotions of freedom and the Liberation War among them.

Responding to a query, Jui Jasmine said: “I have seen the flags of many countries raised above the houses of Bangladesh, but rarely do I see the flag of our country— that we achieved through many sacrifices—billowing above a house.

“Thinking about this motivated me to take the initiative.”

Baliadangi upazila's freedom fighter Dabirul Islam, Bashir Uddin and his son Bangabandhu Smriti Shanshad President Mokhlesur Rahman, along with many members of the media, were with her at the time.

Jui hopes that the flag of red and green will be proudly hoisted above every house on  Independence Day, on March 26.

Residents of the upazilas—including freedom fighters and their families—have welcomed her idea with admiration and happiness.

Thakurgaon Government Woman's College Professor Abu Bakr Siddique said Jui has transcended her physical obstacle and moved towards success as she had published her own book called "Shafollyer Chithi" which translates to "Letter of Success" and a children's book called "Esho golpo pori jibon gori."
