At least nine people were killed and many others injured, in separate road crashes in several districts, and three were killed in a Gopalganj train accident, on Wednesday.
Sirajganj
Four people were killed and 15 others injured in a collision between two buses on the western side of Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj district in the afternoon.
Bangabandhu West police station Officer-in-Charge, Syed Shaheed Alam, confirmed the accident.
He said two Hanif Paribahan buses coming from opposite directions collided head on in the Mulibari area at about 4pm, leaving four dead on the spot.
The identities of the deceased could not be known till 9pm when this report was being filed.
Gopalganj
Three motorcycle riders were killed in Gopalganj after they were struck by a train on an unmanned level crossing in the district in the early morning hours.
The deceased were identified as Raju Sikdar, 25, son of Siddique Sikdar, Tanvir Chowdhury Rocky, 19, son of Kamrul Chowdhury, and Lebu Mollah, 25.
Gopalganj Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge, Md Monirul Islam, said the incident took place at the Vennabari rail crossing on the Gopalganj-Barni road, when a train rammed into the motorbike in the early hours, leaving all three dead on the scene.
Md Abul Kalam, a resident of Vennabari village, said the accident occurred because there was no gateman near the crossing to provide signals regarding the approaching train.
The police and fire service teams rushed to the scene and found the crumpled motorcycle nearly 50 yards away from the crossing.
The bodies were sent to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital morgue.
A woman was killed and two others were injured in a road accident in Sadar upazila of Gopalaganj in the afternoon.
Deceased Mahfuza Begum, 26, wife of Shahidul Hawlader, was a resident of Ujirpur upazila in Barisal.
A bus hit a human hauler, locally known as Nosimon, in the Chechaniakandi area at noon, leaving Mahfuza dead on the spot and two of its passengers injured, said Md Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Sadar police station.
Gaibandha
Two schoolgirls were killed in separate road accidents in Gaibandha district.
The deceased were identified as Babita Rani, 6, a student of class one of Jarmonodi 2 Govt Primary School, daughter of Swapan Kumar Bormon of Jarmonodi village in Sundarganj upazila, and Sumi Akter, 16, daughter of Abdul Goni Janerpara village, and a student of class IX at Karunamoee Girls' High School in the upazila.
Sundarganj police station Officer-in-Charge, SM Abdus Sobhan, said Babita died when a battery-run three wheeler hit her on the Sundarganj-Shovaganj road while she was returning home from school.
Sumi died after a truck hit her on the Sundarganj-Rangpur road on her way home from a coaching centre.
Gazipur
A motorcyclist was killed when a car hit the bike in the Tongi -Ghorashal bypass area in Kaliganj upazila.
The deceased was identified as Shahedul Islam, 40, son of Nehar Uddin of Bahadursadi area in the upazila, said Kaliganj police station Officer-in-Charge, Moin Uddin.
Jessore
Locals blocked the Jessore-Benapole Highway in protest when a female school student lost her leg in a road accident in Jessore.
The accident occurred nearthe Navaron area of the district around 10am.
Sixth graders Nipa, Rina, and Saleha, 13-year-old students of Buruj Bagan High School, were injured after a pick-up van of Palli Bidyut Samity rammed into their school van on the Jessore-Benapole Highway, severing Nipa’s leg.
Confirming the matter, Sharsha police station Officer-In-Charge, Mashiur Rahman, said the injured were taken to a local hospital.
Meanwhile, locals blocked the highway after the accident, halting vehicular movement.
