A man who worked for the Land Office and was a key accused in several Madaripur land dispute cases was brutally murdered on Sunday.

Moazzem Molla worked as an office assistant and typist at Madaripur Sadar Land Office. On Saturday night, he was returning home on his motorcycle when a group of unidentified attackers ambushed him in Brahmandi, dragging him down from his motorcycle and assaulting him with blunt and bladed weapons.

The scuffle was overheard by locals who rescued Moazzem and took him to Madaripur Sadar Hospital. The doctor on duty advised a transfer to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, but Moazzem died en route around midnight.

According to locals, he was accused in seven land dispute cases between rival Awami League factions in the area. They said that Moazzem was murdered for his role in the cases.

When news of his murder broke, violence broke out intermittently in the area, with as many as 20 houses set on fire and vandalized.
