Army man killed in rival attack in Tangail

The incident occurred at Deovogh village in Mahera union

An army person has been killed in an attack by rival members over establishing supremacy in the Mirzapur upazila of Tangail.

The incident occurred at the Deovogh village in the Mahera union on Friday afternoon.

The deceased army member was identified as Azizul Islam, 32, from Deovogh village.

Five people have been detained by the police over the incident.

The detainees are: Belal Mia, 65, son of Abdur Rashid Mia of the same village, Khairul Molla, 18, son of Firoz Molla, Akram Molla, 19, son of Amzad Molla, Mehsin Molla, 28, son of Razzak Molla,  and Liton Molla, 17, son of Rafiq Molla.

According police sources, deceased army man Azizul’s younger brother Rasel and his rival Kamrul Molla were engaged in a brawl on Wednesday night over establishing supremacy in the area. Later senior citizens in the area called for an arbitration meeting to diffuse the feud. 

However, Kamrul, along with his accomplices, attacked Rasel on Thursday night prior to the meeting. Following the second attack, two rival groups of villagers clashed on Friday noon that left six people injured including Azizul.

Azizul sustained head injuries and was admitted to Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital. He died later while being taken to Dhaka for better treatment.       

Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, Mirzapur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) AKM Mizanul Haq said filing of a case in this regard was under process, and the dead body would be sent to Tangail General Hospital for an autopsy.
