A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported gunfight among two rival gangs of drug traders in Meherpur.

The incident occurred in the Munshipara sluice gate area of Gangni upazila's Kazipur village, which is along the Meherpur border, around 2:30am on Monday.

The deceased, Saju, 35, is from Kazipur village.

Police claim to have recovered a locally made gun, one cartridge, and approximately 2kg of cannabis from the spot.

Local Pirtola police outpost In-Charge Sub-Inspector Ajau Kumar Kundu told the Dhaka Tribune: "Based on a tip-off, a police team went to the area. Upon seeing us, the miscreants stopped shooting and escaped.”

"Later, we found a bullet-riddled body on the crime scene, who was then identified with the help of the locals."

The sub-inspector said Saju is one of the top drug traders in the area. He has several cases filed against him with Gangni police for selling drugs. There were several bullet holes in his chest and different parts of his body.

He further said the body would be taken to the police station for autopsy.
