The Bhola district administration is set to launch a drive to free Bhola canal – the central artery of Bhola town – from illegal occupation and curb pollution.
Illegal structures on both sides of the canal between Molla Bridge and Jugir Ghol Bridge would be removed on the first day of the drive on Thursday, Deputy Commissioner Md Selim Uddin said at a press conference in the town on Tuesday.
A list prepared by the district administration shows 147 illegal establishments in the stretch between Molla Bridge and Bangla School Bridge. The authorities have already demarcated the canal areas and ordered the illegal occupants to remove the structures.
The DC said that the drive had been initiated in accordance with a High Court order issued in 2015.
On May 4 that year, a High Court bench ordered the authorities concerned, including the district administration, the municipality and the land department, to free the canal from pollution and illegal occupation.
The order came in response to a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environment Lawyers’ Association (BELA).
