Thirty-one bodies of unborn babies, which were preserved at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for research, were recovered from a dustbin of the hospital on Monday night.

Workers of Barisal City Corporation found the bodies in the trash bin behind the hospital building around 9pm while cleaning it and informed the hospital authorities and police.

Hospital Director Dr SM Bakir Hossain said the bodies were 25-30 years old and were being kept at the college morgue for research work of interns.

He said the matter was being looked into.

The hospital’s Ward Master Modasser Ali said they found the fetuses in a bucket inside the trash can while cleaning the place at night.

He said the unborn babies and fetuses are often left behind by families, which are then used by the hospital for clinical classes.

He said the fetuses found were being buried in the same place, as per the orders of the hospital authorities.

Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station Nurul Islam said they were looking into the matter.

Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee has been formed with Gynecology department head Khurshid Jahan Begum as its chief to look into the matter.
