A man in Gopalganj’s Kotalipara upazila has been awarded Tk50 lakh for his exceptional contribution that once saved the life of Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina.

Prime Minister Shiekh Hasina handed over the cheque to Badiuzzaman Sardar at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on February 3.

Badiuzzaman Sardar, owner of a tea-stall, discovered a bomb near his stall on July 19, 2000, a day before the Awami League President—also then Prime Minister—Sheikh Hasina was scheduled to hold a rally at Sheikh Lutfar Rahman Adarsha Government College in Kotalipara.

The bomb was planted near the rally grounds by Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) Chief Mufti Abdul Hannan, who intended to kill Sheikh Hasina in the blast, during her rally. After being tipped-off by Badiuzzaman, law enforcement rushed to the site and discovered a 76-kilogram bomb.

Badiuzzaman’s discovery saved Sheikh Hasina and many others’ lives.

Though the saviour Badiuzzaman attempted to meet Sheikh Hasina many times, nineteen years have been passed since then.

However, Badiuzzaman’s wish finally came true recently as he met the Prime Minister with the help of Sohrab Hossain, a religious affairs secretary of Kotalipara upazila unit Awami League.

Sohrab Hossain said: “With Badiuzzaman, I met with the PM on January 27. The premier spoke freely with Badiuzzaman and later she gave him a cheque of Tk50 lakh on February 3.”

Badiuzzaman said: “I have tried to meet PM Sheikh Hasina many times in the past but have failed. Nobody helped me. Finally Sohrab Hossain extended his helping hand to me. I have met with the premier and spoken with her.”

“She gave me Tk50 lakh. I am very pleased with her generosity and pray for her well-being,” he added.
