A local Awami League leader and freedom fighter has been shot dead by miscreants in Pabna.
The incident occurred near his residence in Rooppur village, of Pakshi union under Pabna's Ishwardi upazila, around 9pm on Wednesday.
The deceased, Mostafizur Rahman Selim, 67, was the former general secretary of Awami League's Pakshi union unit.
The victim's younger brother, Rubel Hossain, said Mostafizur was returning home—on foot from Rooppur BBC bazaar—when a group of miscreants, riding a motorcycle, opened fire on him and left him injured.
Relatives and locals took him to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex at first, but later began transferring him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 10pm, as his condition had deteriorated. He died on the way to the second hospital.
Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex Residential Medical Officer Dr Shafiqul Islam Shamim said Mostafizur was struck by several bullets on his back and chest. He was promptly transferred to Rajshahi for further treatment, however he died on the way there.
Additional Superintendent of Pabna Police Gautam Kumar Biswas told the Dhaka Tribune: "Acting on information, we went to the site to inspect. However, we have yet to determine the reason for the shooting.
He said Mostafizur was conscious the whole time he was taken to the hospital, however he said could not identify the shooters as it was dark.
"We have started to investigate on the matter," Guatam added.
