3-year-old killed in family feud in Brahmanbaria

The accused murdered the child after the child’s mother rejected his indecent proposals

A three-year-old girl was murdered by her uncle after her mother rejected his indecent proposals, Brahmanbaria police said on Monday.

Halima Khatun, daughter of Amir Hossain and Khadiza Begum, went missing on Saturday morning. Her body was found at an under-construction building in Bhadughar’s Bhuiyapara area of Sadar upazila around 12:30pm that day.

Disclosing the murder details, the district’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Alamgir Hossain, said at a press conference on Monday, that they had questioned a number of family members after Halima’s body was recovered.

Suspect Helal Mia, who is Amir’s brother, was arrested after he confessed to committing the crime — in order to take revenge on his sister-in-law — during questioning on Sunday, Alamgir said.

Police then arrested Helal and his accomplice Rubel.

Quoting Helal, Alamgir said the dispute between Helal and Khadiza started months ago over various family issues. Helal also often stalked her and made indecent proposals to her. He was incensed when Khadiza told others about his advances.

That is when he started planning to kill the child to teach Khadiza a lesson, said the police official.

Two weeks ago, he had planned to drown his niece in a pond, but could not execute the plan.

On Saturday morning, construction worker Helal took Halima out from their home and strangled her to death. He and Rubel then left her body at the under-construction building where he worked.

Later when the family started looking for Halima, Rubel informed them about her body being found in the building.

Khadiza has filed a case at Brahmanbaria model police station accusing Helal and Rubel.
