Police have arrested five men who were collecting extortion money posing as policemen in Shariatpur.
The arrest took place in the Gosairhat upazila in the early hours of Sunday.
The accused are Mohammad Ali, 38, Selim Sardar, 35, Jamal Sardar, 35, Mintu Rari, 35, and Sharif Mollah, 30. All of them are residents of the upazila.
Gosairhat police station OC Selim Reza confirmed the matter, stating : “The accused identified themselves as police and intercepted a fish-laden vehicle on the Patti Bridge and demanded Tk30,000 as toll from the driver around 4:30am on Sunday.”
“On information, police went to the spot and arrested them.”
The OC also said: “The group had been extorting money from people over a long period of time in the upazila.”
