Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has urged BNP and other registered political parties to participate in all the upcoming elections; including the upazila-level one.
Quader—also the Awami League general secretary—made the call while talking to reporters; after inspecting the construction work of a flyover at Konabari in Gazipur at 11:15am on Friday.
The Minister said: “Participating in the polls is BNP’s call but they will have to face consequences if they stand firm on their decision to boycott.”
“Once, the Muslim League was a big political party, and now their existence is facing extinction like endangered animals. Is BNP following the path of the Muslim League? BNP has chosen the path of self-destruction and is shrinking by boycotting the elections,” he said.
Previously, on Thursday, BNP announced that it will not to participate in the upcoming upazila election and the by-polls for the vacant mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Quader urged BNP to reconsider their decision to boycott the elections and asked them to take part in the Upazila Parishad elections, Dhaka North City Corporation poll, and Kishoreganj by-election.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy-Commissioner Azad Mia, Dhaka Divisional Caretaker Engineer Sabuj Uddin Khan, plus officials of the Road and Highways Division and local administration were also present at that time.
