RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) has taken responsibility for a five-year-old child, Sathi, whose mother Afroza Khatun—a ready-made garment(RMG) industry worker—was killed by her husband and his associates in Gazipur.
In a press release issued on Monday, RAB informed the media that the RAB 1 commanding officer issued a check of Tk2 lakh on Sunday, for the child’s current education and rehabilitation.
Additionally, Sathi’s day-labourer maternal uncle has been provided with a job in order to look after the child.
RAB 1 Commanding Officer (CO) Sarwar Bin Kashem told the Dhaka Tribune that, following a family feud, Afroza Begum, 26—an RMG industry worker from Gazipur City Corporation—was strangled to death by her husband, Shahjahan Mia, 28, on January 3.
After killing Afroza, her husband tried to conceal her body by dumping it inside a septic tank adjacent to their house. However, the incident was witnessed by two relatives of the deceased.
The husband ran away when the news spread in the area. Later, on January 4, police recovered Afroza’s body.
Eight days after of this startling incident, RAB 1 members arrested Shahjahan, along with his two associates, in a drive.
Meanwhile, Afroza and Shahjahan’s five-year-old daughter Sathi was entrusted to the guardianship of her maternal uncle, Anwar Hossain. He is a day-labourer and has two children of his own. The expenditures of raising Sathi, along with his own family, were growing arduous for him.
RAB 1 commanding officer noticed the matter and took all responsibility for the infant, providing it a total of Tk2 lakh. The headquarters provided Tk1 lakh for the education and rehabilitation of the child, along with an additional Tk1 lakh.
Locals, along with the deceased’s maternal uncle Ekamot Hossain, said Afroza and Shahjahan had met in a factory they both worked at. At one point, they developed a relationship and got married with the consent of both their families.
After their marriage, they lived in a rented house in the Bhaoraide Uttarpara area of Gazipur City Corporation. Afroza was a worker of Shyamoli apparel factory in the Salna area while her husband worked in a steel mill of Jolarpar area.
