Natore ward councilor hacked to death

Jamirul Islam was killed in broad daylight

A ward councilor from Gopalpur municipality in Lalpur upazila in Natore has been hacked to death in broad daylight.

Jamirul Islam, 37, ward no 9 councilor and a municipality Awami League member, was killed on Sunday afternoon in front of his own house in Biropara of Gopalpur municipality.

The incident was confirmed by Lalpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam Jewel.

Kamruzzaman, father of the deceased, said: "Around 1pm, Nazrul left home to offer his afternoon prayers at a nearby mosque. The moment he got on the road in front of the house, 10-12 people attacked him with sharp weapons."

Nazrul was taken to Lalpur Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, where the duty doctors declared him dead, Kamruzzaman said.

A case is being prepared in Lalpur police station, Nazrul's elder brother Shahidul Islam said.

Duty doctor at Lalpur Upazila Health Complex, Dr Razzak, said Nazrul's head, chest, and back bore signs of injuries inflicted by a sharp weapon. "He died of excessive blood loss," Dr Razzak said.

MP of Lalpur-Bagatipara constituency, Shahidul Islam Bakul, said the police have been instructed to arrest those involved in the murder.

Lalpur police station OC said the murder site has been inspected. "Police is investigating to catch those involved with the murder," he said.
