The folk culture of Bangladesh, the culture that resonates in every Bangladeshi's heart, is slowly disappearing as a result of cultural commoditization.
To address this issue and prevent aggressive mass commercialization, a group of students from Jahangirnagar University (JU) have organized a winter festival titled "Him Utshob."
Organized by Poromporay Amra — a student platform at Jahangirnagar University — the festival is scheduled to start on Thursday, January 17, and end on Saturday, January 19.
This effort of theirs, for the fourth consecutive time, is taking place to preserve and promote the diverse folk culture that we have, and connect to, and that resides at the core of our roots.
The three-day festival will include events such as: an art camp, painting and photography exhibitions, classical music presentations, indigenous dance, snake charming, lathi khela, and folk concerts.
The organizers have dedicated this year's concert to legendary musician Ayub Bachchu.
Also on Saturday, January 19, the closing day of the festival, Bangladeshi rock band Bangla Five will release their debut album “Confusion.”
Other local mainstream and folk bands will also perform at the festival.
