Separate road accidents in four districts have left at least nine people killed and several others injured.
Four of the incidents took place in Brahmanbaria, Bhola and Jessore on Tuesday, and the other in Thakurgaon on Monday night.
In Brahmanbaria, five people were killed and three others injured when a microbus plunged into a roadside ditch in Bijoynagar upazila on Tuesday, reports UNB.
Hossain Sarkar, officer in-charge (OC) of Khatihata highway police, said the accident took place on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in the upazila’s Birpasha area around 3pm.
Five passengers died on the spot when the Sylhet-bound microbus, carrying a bridal party, hit a roadside tree and fell into the ditch after the driver lost control, he said.
The deceased were identified as Hasan Jamal, 32, Apu Mia, 30, Apu's wife Jhumur Begum, 25, Rajin Salehin Liton, 28 and Parash Mia, 25.
A fire-fighting unit rushed to the spot and rescued the injured, including the groom. The survivors, one of whom is in critical condition, were taken to Madhabpur Upazila Health Complex.
Microbus driver Nabir Ali was also arrested, OC Sarkar said.
In Bhola, two schoolboys were killed in two separate road accidents at Sadar and Charfesson upazilas on Tuesday, reports BSS.
The deceased were identified as Tuhin, 12, and Shahin, 14.
Police said Tuhin died when a bus hit him in Sadar upazila’s Elisha Ferry Ghat area. The bus was later impounded by police.
Shahin died on the spot when a trolley ran over him at Charfesson’s Kutubganj area.
In Jessore, a man was killed after a bus hit him in Monirampur upazila at Tuesday noon.
The deceased was identified as Promod Halder, 42.
Locals said the accident occurred in front of Monirampur Upazila Parishad when Promod Halder was going to Monirampur Bazar. He was rushed to a hospital, where the duty doctors declared him dead.
In Thakurgaon, a motorcyclist was killed and another injured after a bus ran over the two-wheeler at Sadar upazila’s Chhoto Khochabari area on Monday night, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Danesh Barman, 38.
Mofidar Rahman, station officer of Thakurgaon Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the bus ran over Danesh when he fell down on the road after his motorcycle had skidded, leaving him dead on the spot.
Subal Roy, who was riding with Danesh, was taken to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital with minor injuries.
