RMG workers-police clash injures 10 in Ashulia

Holiday declared in 51 factories

At least 10 ready-made garment (RMG) workers have been injured in a clash with police while they set out to protest for the seventh day.

The incident occurred in the Jamgora area near Abdullahpur-Baipail highway on Sunday, when police tried to disperse the workers positioned on the road protesting discrepancies in the new wage structure.

In addition, due to labour unrest, some 51 factories in the area have declared a holiday fromSunday.

According to workers and police, the workers positioned themselves on the highway and blocked the road. On information, police went to the spot and tried to disperse the workers.

Later, around 9:30am, the workers hurled brickbats towards the police, leading the police to charge batons on them. Law enforcers then threw teargas shells and used water cannons to disperse the protestors, leaving 10 injured.

Dhaka 1 Ashulia Industrial Police Director Sana Saminur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune: “The situation is under control right now. Besides, additional police forces have been deployed to avoid any untoward situations.”
