15 RMG factories shut down in Savar, Ashulia

There are around 500 factories in Savar and Ashulia

Fifteen ready-made garment (RMG) factories in Savar and Ashulia have been shut down; following the recent protesting by garment workers over the newly-announced wage structure.

Out of the 15, three factories of Standard Group in Savar were shut down for an indefinite period of time, GM Abdul Razak of the group, told the Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday afternoon. 

Ashulia Industrial Police (Dhaka 1) SP Sana Saminur Rahman, told the Dhaka Tribune that the owners, of the factories where the workers have been demonstrating, took the decision after the recent protests. 

He said there are around 500 factories in Savar and Ashulia. 

However, the names and details of the garment factories are yet to be known.

Workers of several garment factories have been protesting in Savar, and different parts of Dhaka, for the last three days; they are protesting against the discrepancies of the newly-announced wage structure.

At least 30 people were injured in separate clashes between RMG industry workers and police in the Ulail and Ganda areas of Savar in the morning. On the other hand, 20 people, including two journalists were injured in a clash between police and RMG workers in Gazipur in the afternoon.
