A man accused of kidnapping a third-grader has been killed in a 'gunfight' with police in the Satnal area of Monirampur upazila in Jessore.
The deceased Billal, 19, died in the early hours of Wednesday, confirmed Additional Superintendent of Jessore police Ansar Uddin. The body of the kidnapped child was also recovered the same night.
Ansar said: "On January 6, Siddiqur Rahman's son from Khedaipur village in Manirampur upazila was kidnapped. The kidnappers contacted Siddiqur to ask for a ransom, upon which Siddiqur made a written complaint to the police station.
"Police identified Billal through the bKash number provided by the kidnappers," Ansar said. "We sent a team to the Satnal area in the early hours of Tuesday when, sensing police presence, the kidnappers started firing."
He claimed Billal was killed on the spot by shots fired by the kidnappers. Police also recovered one shooter gun and one round of bullets from the spot.
The kidnapped child's body was recovered from under the Khedaipur culvert around 4am on Wednesday. A case is being prepared in connection with the incident, the additional police superintendent said.
