Sirajganj AL leader's house under attack

Several improvised bombs were set off and shots were fired in the leader’s backyard

Miscreants have fired shots and set off improvised bombs inside the residence of an Awami League leader in Dhukuria village, under Shialkol union, in Sadar upazila of Sirajganj.

The attack occurred inside the house of ward Awami League President of Dhukuria village Jagadish Chandra Saha in the early hours of Wednesday.

After hearing of the incident, the site was visited by: Sadar upazila Chairman and upazila Awami League Convener Reaz Uddin, President of the municipality Awami League Helal Uddin, President of the district Puja Udjapon Parishad Santosh Kumar Kanu, and others.

Local Union Parishad member Ataur Rahman Ratan said: "In the early hours of Wednesday, a team of 10 to 12 miscreants set off three improvised bombs and fired two rounds of bullets in the backyard of Jagadish's house. 

"They escaped as soon as locals came running to the scene— upon hearing the explosions," he said. 

Inspector (investigation) of Sadar police station Rafiqul Islam said police had recovered evidence of the improvised bombs from the scene.

However, Nurul Islam, inspector (operation) of Sadar police station said: "Despite the locals' claims of gunshots, we did not find bullet shells in Jagadish's house."

Awami League is taking steps to file a case against the incident, said Sub-Inspector of Sadar police station in charge of Shialkol union, Abu Zafar.

Meanwhile, Sadar upazila Chairman Reaz Uddin told reporters that the attack was carried out by criminals from BNP-Jamaat to disrupt the peaceful environment surrounding the polls.

The claims were denied by General Secretary of Sirajganj BNP Saidur Rahman Bachchu.
