Another Awami League leader’s house was also attacked

Update : 26 Nov 2018, 06:43 PM

An Awami League leader has been accused of beating the party activists of former Awami League MP Towhid Jung Murad in Savar.

The incident took place on Sunday night in Roktarpur, Savar Municipality.

The injured were taken to hospital.

It is also alleged that an Awami League leader’s house was attacked.

According to Roktarpur residents, local Chhatra League leader Moktar Hossain – along with his men – campaigned for Murad to be nominated for the 11th general election over the last few days.

For the aforementioned reason, a dispute took place with current MP Dr Enam’s supporters and local Awami League Assistant Publicity Secretary Majid.

Among the injured, eight were identified. They are: Faruk, Asadul, Hridoy, Shahnuddin Shabu, Sabuj, Shuvo, Mostakin, and Monir.

The beating occurred after the nomination was announced—in favour of the current MP. On the same night, Awami League leader Sirajul Haque’s house and office were also attacked allegedly by the current MP’s men.

About the incident, Moktar said: “My men were beaten because they campaigned in favour of Murad.”

Moktar claimed his men were also threatened to leave the area.

When contacted, Majid denied the accusation and said such things were made up to tarnish his name.

About the attack on Sirajul’s house and office, Savar upazila Awami League General Secretary Ali Haider said: “This happened because two factions grew in support of two nomination-seekers.”

Dr Enam was contacted for comment but was unreachable.

Savar Model police station OC Abdul Awal said: “Police visited the place soon after receiving a written complaint. We will investigate the matter and take the necessary steps.”
