The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was observed in Barisal on Sunday with different programs throughout the city.

Durbar Network organized different programs including a human chain, rally and procession in front of the Ashwini Kumar Hall at the city centre.

Participants and speakers called on to raise awareness on prevention and elimination of violence against women at the program organized by Durbar Network.

“More than 20 years after the World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, violence against women remain a persistent obstacle to human and economic development, and to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals,” the speakers told.

They also said: “The endemic violence against women was impeding women’s opportunities to achieve legal, social, political and economic equality in society causing physical, sexual or psychological harm in both public and private life.”

They said women do not fully enjoy their human rights and fundamental freedom, adding that the long term failure to protect and promote those rights and freedom in relation to violence against women will have a generational impact.

The district unit of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad organized another program to mark the day, which was presided over by unit President Rabeya Begum, and addressed by Puspa Guha, secretary of Mohila Parishad, and Rashida Begum, district women’s affairs officer, as well NGO activists Shah Sajeda, Anowar Zahid, Hasina Begum, and Shuvangkar Charaborty.
