The transgenders, locally referred to as “hijra,” were considered to be one of the most persecuted and neglected communities in Bangladesh.

But, consistent government initiative and an increase in public awareness have helped the transgender community into becoming self dependent and aided them in integrating themselves with the society.

A group of young students from Dhaka University, under the organization “Brihonnola” (the Bangla word for transgender), organized a tour of Sylhet for 21 transgenders. Sylhet has one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the country.

The team, led by Associate Professor of Institute of Education and Research Dr Md Ahsan Habib, began their journey for Sylhet from the TSC Chattar of Dhaka University on Thursday.

Members of Brihonnola and the transgenders toured various tourist spots in the district and later held a press conference at the Sylhet Press Club to share the travel experience on Friday evening.

Reading out a statement at the event, Brihonnola President Sadiqul Islam said: “The aim of this tour is to spread the message of equality in every corner of the society. Brihonnola hopes that the people will change the existing point of view and accept people of every gender and strata as fellow human beings.

“It is the only way to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). We are also optimistic that the tour will inspire the youth community to engage with our vision of unity.”

The Brihonnola initiative was supported by Social Science Faculty of Dhaka University Dean Professor Dr Sadeka Halim, Chairman of the Education and Research Institute's special education department, Dr Md Mahbubur Rahman, Global Platform Bangladesh and Bangladesh Chhatra League.
