Love has once again proven that it knows no boundaries of race, caste or creed, and that it can make one travel across an entire ocean just to be with each other.

This is the story of Michael Apu Mondol, 28, a resident of Kaunia in Barisal, and Sarah Kuhn, a 28-year-old American, who met on Facebook a year ago and are now engaged.

Sarah, a nurse at an old age home, flew all the way from her hometown of Minnesota to Barisal to meet Apu, who is a house painter in Kaunia.

They first met on Facebook, in a debate group, and started communicating soon after. Eventually, regular video-calls and frequent conversations led them to fall in love.

Later on, their families also communicated via video-calls and approved their decision to get engaged.

On November 19, Sarah landed in Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, where she met Apu in-person for the first time. They reached Apu’s family home in Barisal the next day.

On Wednesday, according to the Bengali adaptation of Christian customs, they held their Gaye Holud program and exchanged rings in a local Church. A small marriage ceremony was organized by their friends and family members.

Although locals were astonished at Sarah’s decision to come to Bangladesh and marry Apu, they were very impressed by her friendly and warmhearted demeanor.

Sarah will soon return to the United States to start processing Apu’s visas, and they plan to live there together once his visa is approved.
