7 killed in road crashes across country

The accidents happened in Rangpur, Sirajganj and Rangamati

At least seven people were killed and several others injured in different road crashes across the country on Sunday.

In Rangpur, four people were killed and one other injured in a collision between a truck and a three-wheeler inthe Lahirihat area of the Sadar upazila around 9:30am.

One of the deceased was Badsha Ali of the Boirampur village while the identities of the three others are yet to be known.

Kotwali police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shudipto Shahin said a truck coming from opposite direction hit the three wheeler leaving three dead on the spot and two injured.

One of the injured died while he was being taken to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital, said Shudipto.

Following the incident, traffic on the Rangpur-Badarganj-Parbatipur Highway stalled for one hour.

In Sirajganj, two workers were killed and four others injured as a pick-up van hit them in the Saidabad area of the Sadar upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Jahangir Hossain, 30, son of Abdus Sattar and Shamim, 32, son of Anwar Sheikh, resident of Jarila Porabari village of the upazila. All of them were workers of the Sirajganj Power Plant.

Syed Shahid Alam, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge West police station, said a group of workers were standing beside the Bangabandhu Bridge West Link Highway to board a vehicle to return home around 7am after overnight work at the plant.

At one stage, the reckless pick-up van hit them, leaving Jahangir and Shamim dead on the spot and four others injured.

The injured were admitted to the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital.

In Rangamati, a woman was killed and four others injured when a three wheeler locally known as ‘chandergari’ skidded off the road and plunged into a roadside ditch in the Naniarchar upazila of the district in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Madhumita Chakma, 26.

Naniarchar police station Officer-in-Charge Md Kabir Hossain confirmed the incident.
