Fake journalist jailed on extortion charge in Cox’s Bazar

A fake journalist has been jailed on a charge of demanding extortion from the land office in Cox’s Bazar Sadar. The youth, named Saimon Sarwar Kayem, 25, is the son of Nurul Alam of Yusuperkhali village under the upazila. “Saimon demanded extortion from a staff of the office posing as a senior journalist of ‘S Channel’ on Wednesday,” Assistant Commission (Land) and Executive Magistrate Pankaj Barua told the Dhaka Tribune. “On suspicion, we contacted the Information Ministry and learnt there was no such TV channel. “Later he was jailed for a month on the charge of extortion and hindering the work of a public servant,” Magistrate Pankaj added. Police detained seven more fake journalists on extortion charges in Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj last month.
