A person posing as an employee of the Detective Branch (DB) of police has been killed in a reported shootout with police in Ashulia’s Tongabari area.
The incident occurred early on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Shamim Hossain, 45. He posed as a DB policeman to steal money and valuables from people in the area.
Police arrested Shamim, in Kalampur area on Sunday night, in connection with a case on charges of mugging, said Dhamrai police station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Dipak Chandra Saha.
Based on Shamim’s information, law enforcement conducted a drive in Tongabari area, along with him, to arrest his associates, the OC said.
Upon seeing the police, criminals opened fire on them—forcing law enforcement to retaliate and triggering a gunfight.
Shamim was wounded during the incident.
Police rushed him to the upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.
The body was sent to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for an autopsy.
