A total of 892 fishermen have been sentenced to different terms of imprisonment in the Barisal division in the last 20 days (Oct 7to Oct26) for violating the ongoing ban on ilish fishing.
According to the fisheries department, the 22-day (Oct 7 to Oct 29) ban on catching and selling ilish for safe spawning of the fish started on October 7.
The department of fisheries with the help of the upazila administration, police, and coastguard conducted drives in several rivers of six districts in the division, said Azizul Haque, senior assistant director of the divisional fishery department.
The department also conducted around 1,673 mobile court drives and filed 846 cases, he said.
