More than 600 fishermen jailed for violating ilish ban

During this period,a total of 1,213 drives were conducted, 656 mobile courts formed and 561 cases lodged to prevent violations against the imposed ban

A total of 637 fishermen has been jailed and fined for violating the ban against netting ilish in six districts of the Barisal division in the last 15 days,confirmed Assistant Director of the Divisional Fisheries Office Azizur Rahman to the Dhaka Tribune.

He said:"A total of Tk8.3 lakh realized as fines, two million metres fishing nets seized and a little over five thousand kilogram of ilish was recovered from the fishermen during the drives against illegal ilish netting in the division in the last 15 days."

During this period,a total of 1,213 drives were conducted, 656 mobile courts formed and 561 cases lodged to prevent violations against the imposed ban, added the fishery official.

The 22-day ban imposed for preservation and increase of ilish wealth on its main breeding season started on October 7 and will continue till October 29.
