The Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested two top leaders of BNP after a meeting at the party's Nasiman Bhaban office in the Kazir Dewri area of the Chittagong city.

The duo was picked up from the city's GEC intersection around 1:30pm Monday, said Chittagong Metropolitan Police's (CMP) Assistant Commissioner SM Mobassher Hossain.

The arrestees were identified as BNP's central Organizing Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Shamim and the party's metropolitan unit Secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar.

Mobassher, however, declined to say in which cases the two were shown arrested.

Dr Shahadat Hossain, president of Chittagong city BNP, told the Dhaka Tribune that the two leaders were arrested in a bid to thwart the rally of Jatiya Oikya Front scheduled to be held in Chittagong on October 27.

"After wrapping up the meeting, the two BNP leaders dropped Barkat Ullah Bulu at a rest house. On their way back, the members of DB arrested them. We strongly condemn such arbitrary arrest," added Dr Shahadat.

A preparatory meeting was held at BNP's Nasiman Bhaban office in the run up to the rally of Jatiya Oikya Front. The party's Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu presided over the preparatory meeting attended by the leaders of JSD, Gono Forum and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam.

It is also mentionable that on Sunday the police filed a case accusing 150 leaders and activists of BNP on a charge of assaulting police on the court premises when BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury surrendered before the court.
