The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday in the Burapukur area of Akkelpur upazila. The injured suspect, Ohidul Islam, 48, was admitted to Joypurhat District Hospital around 3am.
Confirming the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, the Akkelpur police station officer-in-charge Kiran Chandra said: “Two gangs of illegal narcotics traders engaged in a gunfight in the Burapukur area around 1:30am. Ohidul got shot in his right leg.”
“On a tip off, police arrived at the scene and rescued Ohidul. The rest of the culprits managed to escape,” he said. “Law enforcers seized a pistol with a bullet and 47 bottles of phensedyl from the spot.”
