A three-day long cultural program to mark the 128th death anniversary of Fakir Lalon Shah, the most prominent figure of country’s baul tradition, has been organized by the Kushtia district administration and Lalon Academy.

The program will include a Lalon Mela (Lalon fair), discussion and rendition of songs by artistes from the academy and Bauls from across the country at Chheuriya of the Kumarkhali upazila.

Awami League Joint General Secretary and Member of Parliament from Kushtia-3 Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif will inaugurate the function today afternoon said the academy sources.

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu and Kushtia-3 MP Abdur Rouf will attend the program as special guests.

The local administration has tightened security to avert any untoward incident during program, said Kushtia Superintendent of Police SM Tanvir Arafat and will deploy the anti-crime elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and plainclothes police, apart from the regular forces.

Meanwhile, bauls across the country started to gather at Chheuriya.

Baul Bard Lalon died on the first day of Bangla month of Kartik in 1297. He was laid to rest beside the Kaliganga River.

Lalon has secured a unique position in the history of traditional music for his humanitarian songs, blending philosophies of different devotional traditions.
