An alleged drug dealer has been killed in a “gunfight” with members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Rajshahi metropolitan police.
The incident occurred in the Madhyachar area of Katakhali thana, in the city, around 3am on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Alamgir Hossain Alo, 49. He is from the Dashmari area of Rajshahi.
Two police constables were injured during the gunfight, and have received treatment.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Senior Assistant Commissioner Ifte Khayer Alam confirmed the incident, saying: “A police drive to locate weapons and drugs was conducted in the Katakhali area in the early hours of Sunday. During the drive, a gang of criminals opened fire at the police, who fired back in self-defence.
“Afterwards, police found Alamgir in critical condition and took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival,” he added.
“The other criminals managed to flee the spot,” Ifte added.
Ifte furthered: “Alamgir had 10 different cases to his name, with various police stations, including one where two police officers were beaten and hacked to death.”
198 bottles of phensedyl and a pistol were recovered from the spot.
