Four to die for killing Satkhira college student

Two others were acquitted as allegations brought against them could not be proven

A court in Satkhira has sentenced four people to death for killing a college student in 2016.

The verdict was handed down on Wednesday, reports UNB.

The convicts are: Ali Ahmed Shaon, son of Abdul Alim; Shahadat Hossain, son of Abdul Karim; Saju Sheikh, son of Rezaul Sheikh; and Nazmul Hossain of Debhata upazila. Saju and Shaon were tried in absentia.

Goutam Sarker, a second-year student at the Shimanto Degree College and son of Ganesh Sarker – a Union Parishad member of Mahadebnagar village in Sadar upazila – was killed on December 13, 2016. According to the prosecution, Goutam was killed after being abducted by the accused following prior disagreements..

The victim's father filed a case accusing six people on December 16, 2016.

Later, on April 18, 2017, police submitted charge-sheet against ten people.

After examining records and witnesses, Satkhira District and Session Judge Sadiqul Islam Talukder handed down the verdict and acquitted two others as allegations brought against them could not be proven.
