Road crashes kill 10 across Bangladesh

The accidents took place in Jamalpur, Bagerhat, Savar, Khagrachhari, Sylhet, Chittagong and Manikganj

At least 10 people have been killed and many others injured yesterday in separate road accidents in different districts across Bangladesh.

In Jamalpur, a motorcyclist was killed in a head-on collision with a bus on the Jamalpur-Dewangonj new bypass road. 

The deceased was identified as Faysal Mahmud Supta, 21, a student of North South University.

Faysal’s firend Shizan Mahmud, 21, was also severely injured in the accident and later admitted to a local hospital.

Jamalpur Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Nasimul Islam said they impounded the bus, but its driver and assistant managed to flee.

A case would be filed over the incident, he said.

In Bagerhat, a man was killed and 15 others injured in a collision between two buses – one from Green Line Paribahan and the other from Didar Paribahan – on the Khulna-Mawa Highway near the Mollahat upazila. 

The deceased was identified as Shahadat Hossain, 25, the Green Line bus driver’s assistant, police said.

The injured were taken to the Fakir Hat Health Complex and Khulna Medical College Hospital. Three of them were in critical condition.

In Savar, two people were run over and killed by different vehicles near Ulail-Islampur bus stand while they were crossing the Dhaka-Aricha Highway.

Security guard of Sterling Garments Belayet Hossain, 35, was run over by a Hanif Paribahan bus, and Shahin Hossain, 32, of Al-Muslim Group Garments, was run over by a car. 

Savar model police station OC Abdul Auywal said the bodies were later sent to a hospital for autopsies, adding that a case would be filed in this regard.

In Khagrachhari, a man was killed after a stone-laden truck fell into the Chengi River after some wooden planks of a bailey bridge broke down at Mahalchhari. 

The incident took place in Singinala area around 10am.

The body of local worker Md Mominul Haque was found six hours later by Fire Service divers with the help of the locals.

Four others, including the driver, were rescued right after the incident. The driver, who sustained head injuries, was admitted to a local hospital.

In Sylhet, two workers of the Rural Electricity Board were killed and three others injured as a bus hit a van defying a red flag signal at Gazia in the Osmaninagar upazila.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Hai and Rasel of Gaibandha’s Shahghata upazila.

Both died on the spot after the Sherpur-bound bus hit the van on which the workers were loading electric poles.

In Chittagong, two people were killed and another injured in separate road accidents.

A goods-laden truck hit minor girl Priya Begum, 4, and her mother Rupali Begum in the Kadamrasul area on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in the Sitakundu upazila around 10:45pm, said highway police’s OC Ashan Habib.

Duty doctors declared Priya dead after the duo were taken to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

In another incident, an unidentified pedestrian was killed after being run over by a bus in the Choumohoni area under the Anwara upazila.

In Manikganj, an unidentified motorcyclist was killed and 38 readymade garment factory workers injured in a road crash on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Bhatbar in the Sadar upazila in the morning.

Golra highway police OC Habibur Rahman said the accident took place around 7:30am when a minibus carrying a group of garment workers hit the motorcycle and then overturned, leaving the motorcyclist dead on the spot and the workers injured.

The injured were admitted to the Manikganj Hospital.
